Your home is many things. It is your safe space, your escape from this fast-paced, busy world, and a place to call your own.

It is your sanctuary!

You may be someone who spends a lot of time at home, or due to a busy work schedule and social life, long to have more time to enjoy your home.

Here are 5 simple ways to create a more calming environment in your home:

  1. Use aromatherapy

Have you ever come across a particular scent that took you straight to a specific memory or time in your life? Have you ever smelled an aroma that instantly made you feel calmer and more relaxed? Different smells can invoke different emotional and physiological reactions.

There are a few ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your home.

You can add essential oils to a diffuser, use a natural room spray, or light some incense in a room.

2. Technology-free zones

We are in a constantly ‘switched on’ world and surrounded by technology - emails, various messaging platforms, social media, television entertainment…

Nowadays we consume so much information online that it can overwhelm us, make us feel anxious, and make us feel like we can’t keep up with life.

Our minds need downtime to think and process information, but with technology all around us, it can be easy to forget this.

Dedicate a space in your home that is technology-free, where you can be present and mindful in whatever you are doing. This can be your bedroom, study, the dining table, or even just a corner of the living room.

Go back to the basics with this space in your home - read books, journal about your thoughts and feelings, meditate, move your body, allow your mind to wander, reflect and daydream for a while.

3. Get creative with interior design

Your home should reflect your style, values, and personality. When designing your space, keep in mind that it’s good to get inspiration online, but don’t lose your personal taste and individual style.

You really don’t need to spend a lot of money to enhance your space - add some indoor plants for more greenery, stack a couple of your favourite books on the coffee table and place your favourite candle on top, lean a small print against your side table - there are so many ways to get creative with it!

Carefully consider and curate each item you buy for your home and buy items that not only bring you joy and are aesthetically pleasing, but where relevant, also functional.

Designing a space into something you love will not only bring you more joy but even a sense of calm after a long day.

4. Lighting

Speaking of interior design, the type of lighting you have in your home can really set the mood for your space!

Choose dimmer light bulbs for your main lights or add in some nice lamps in your living room, bedroom, and study space.

Lights that produce warmer tones will have a more calming effect. Lamps are a great way to light up a space just enough to set a relaxing mood.

Of course, candles are beautiful to add to any space too! Choose one that also contains essential oils and you will get the benefit of aromatherapy as well!

5. Routines and rituals

Routines can help create order and structure in your life and when things get busy.

Having a routine to follow can help you stay organised and feel more grounded.

You can include several mini routines throughout the day to create a more calming environment in your home. These could include your morning routine, exercise routine, meal prep routine, and an evening routine.

Rituals can be more indulgent or spiritual in nature. These can be very small acts that bring you more joy and a sense of calm to your home.

For example, you may enjoy lighting your favourite scented candle before writing in your journal. You may follow a ritual to prepare your space for meditation by making yourself a cup of tea, spraying the room with a scented-room spray, and pulling an oracle card.

Your home should represent who you are. It should be a space for you to retreat to when life gets too much. It should be a safe and calming space.

Don’t feel pressured to make too many changes or implement too many things at once. You can start off with one room and work your way around each room.

Enjoy the process of creating a calmer home!
